Lundgaard debuts in F1 machinery

Christian Lundgaard became the latest Renault Sport Academy driver to test contemporary Formula 1 machinery. The Dane climbed into the cockpit of Renault’s 2017-spec R.S.1.7, powered by the current generation of Power Units at the Hungaroring on Thursday. His test follows in the wheel tracks of fellow RSA member, and F3 teammate, Max Fewtrell.

The 18-year-old has been in the French side’s academy since 2017 and the test follows some impressive recent outings for his Formula 3 team, ART Grand Prix.

The Dane currently sits fifth in the Championship standings, with one victory and two pole positions in 2019. Lundgaard, who is an SMP F4 Champion and a Spanish F4 Champion, will take part in the F3 season finale in Sochi, next week.

“Today was a good day with a childhood dream coming true: driving a Formula 1 car on a race track,” Lundgaard elated. “I’ve done some demos before in Formula 1 machinery but nothing can compare to this.

“I’m pretty pleased with the day in general, I kept it on the black stuff, which was important and completed a lot of laps. I felt comfortable straight away, which was pleasing. It was unbelievable driving down the straight for the first time and then feeling the brake power the car has.

“Hopefully, one day, I will drive a current car with my name on it and do all the races. That’s my goal. I would like to say thanks to Renault for this opportunity; it was unreal and something I will remember for a very long time. I will never forget this experience.”
