Ugo Ugochukwu was in good form on the final day of the post-season test in Jerez, as the Campos Racing driver completed a 1:30.012 in the morning session to set the fastest time of the test.
The American driver followed that up with the second quickest time in the afternoon, with his rookie teammate Ernesto Rivera leading the way with a 1:30.605.
It was a fast start to the day as the teams focused their attentions on qualifying simulations, with Freddie Slater setting the early benchmark of a 1:31.782.
But the times dropped quickly as James Wharton went quickest on a 1:31.481, with Matteo de Palo following him across the line to go to second place, 0.027s behind.
Ugochukwu then took over P1 with a 1:31.471, before his Campos Racing teammate Rivera demoted him to second with a 1:31.294.
Van Amersfoort Racing’s Bruno del Pino then clocked a 1:31.053 to go fastest, before improving to a 1:30.765 on his next lap. TRIDENT’s Noah Stromsted was his closest challenger in P2, just over a tenth off the pace.
Several teams then brought their drivers in for another set of the Hard tyres, and on this occasion, Christian Ho went fastest on a 1:30.437, with Slater in second, 0.070s behind.
Ugochukwu returned to the top of the leaderboard with a 1:30.012, and while Slater improved on his next attempt, he was still over three-tenths behind the leading time in second.
But just as they were preparing for another lap, Campos’ Rivera stopped down the main straight, bringing out the Red Flags.
A number of drivers returned to the track straight afterwards but could not close in on Ugochukwu. However, Rivera did come out of the pitlane later to go up to second, just under two-tenths away from his fellow Campos driver.
The teams then began their long run performance for the final hour of the session, meaning there were no changes to the leaderboard, with Ugochukwu the fastest of all.
There were however two Red Flag stoppage within the final 30 minutes of the session, caused by Gerrard Xie and Jin Nakamura stopping on track, with the latter bringing the morning’s running to a close.
Ugochukwu picked up where he left off in the morning as he clocked a 1:30.890 on his first lap of the session, before his teammate Rivera demoted him to second with a 1:30.605.
The Mexican driver’s time remained unbeaten for the rest of the session, as the teams turned their attentions to race pace.
While the top two stayed put, the Hitech TGR trio of Nakamura, Michael Shin and Fionn McLaughlin followed in behind to round out the top five.
The drivers continued to clock up the mileage until the Red Flags were waved with just over 30 minutes left in the test, after ART Grand Prix rookie Kanato Le stopped on track at Turn 9.
But once the action resumed, several drivers were able to improve, although no one could eclipse the top five on the leaderboard.
That brings an end to a test where Van Amersfoort Racing’s Hiyu Yamakoshi clocked the most milage with 157 laps across the two days.
The drivers and teams will now make their way to Barcelona for the second post-season test which is set to take place from October 15-16.
