Following the conclusion of the Saturday’s FIA Formula 3 Sprint Race, Noel León and Rafael Câmara have been handed penalties.
Firstly, León has been given a five-second time penalty for causing a collision.
The PREMA Racing driver was alleged to have caused a collision with Brando Badoer and Charlie Wurz.
After the race, the Stewards examined video evidence and spoke to both the driver and the team representative to be wholly responsible for the collision.
However, the Stewards found the highly dynamic and confusion situation to be a mitigating circumstance, with León surprised to hear that they were three-wide into the corner, while Wurz and Badoer were aware of the situation.
As a result, the Stewards have chosen to apply a five-second time penalty, which is lower than the usual baseline penalty of 10 seconds for collisions.
This drops León from P8 to P19 in the final classification.
Secondly, Rafael Câmara has been given a 10-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining a lasting advantage while defending his position to Tuukka Taponen.
After the Sprint, the Stewards reviewed the available evidence and spoke to both the driver and a team representative.
They found that the drivers of Car 5 and Car 8 had gone side-by-side into Turn into Turn 4, but Câmara went off the track and rejoined safely at Turn 5 and returned side-by-side with Taponen going into Turn 6.
However, the Stewards found the driver of Car 5 should have lost the advantage to Car 8 and restoring parity was insufficient to negate an advantage and in this situation, it constituted gaining an advantage.
As a result, they elected to give Câmara a 10-second time penalty, dropping him from P12 to P25 in the final classification.
