Verschoor “created his own luck,” for highest Qualifying finish

Richard Verschoor was pleased to see luck finally fall his way in an unusual Qualifying session at Spa, which was hampered by both rain, and a battle for track position.

With rain looking likely, and with the tow pretty useful around Spa, the grid was well bunched up as they all headed out for Qualifying at the same time. This saw a large proportion of the field fail to set a truly competitive time before the rain did come down.

Verschoor was lucky enough to be towards the front of the queue, allowing him to set a decent time – one that was good enough for sixth - even if it was “definitely not a really good lap.”

“I think finally this season, luck was a little bit on our side,” he began. “I was happy to get a lap in. I think I created my own luck a bit, because I pushed a lot at the beginning.

“It was like Monza last year, and we were told that if that happens, we should try and push as much as we can to get to the front. I did that and managed to get a lap in. It was definitely not a really good lap, but I was pleased to even get a lap in.”

P6 hands the Dutchman his highest starting position of the season for Race 1, and he knows he has the pace to make a few moves – providing he can keep his tyres under control.

“Usually in the race we are really strong,” he said “We just have to see what happens with the tyre degradation, because last year was pretty high. We have some good tyres for tomorrow though, so it should be good.”
