HWA RACELAB driver Rafael Villagómez takes us on a trip around his hometown of Leon in Mexico. We look at places to visit, the sites to see, and of course, the motor racing scene.

WHERE IS YOUR HOMETOWN?

“I was born in Mexico, in Leon, Guanajuato, although I have been living in Europe for six years now. Originally, I was living in France and now I am living in Spain.

“Both France and Spain were quite different from where I was born in Mexico. Leon is a real working city, I think that is the best way to describe it.”

WHERE SHOULD TOURISTS VISIT?

“Not far from Leon there is the capital of the state, Guanajuato City, and there is a mining town that is really nice. It’s a very small town, very old style. I would suggest going there instead of Leon if you are a tourist.

“Normally I would go back in both summer and winter, but this year with the racing calendar, I will probably only go back during the winter. When I am home, I like to spend time with my family and my dogs, as I don’t get to see them very often. We have got six French Bulldogs.”

WHERE SHOULD PEOPLE EAT AND DRINK?

“The food is always nice, you will never have any trouble finding a good restaurant to eat at. When I am home, I usually at my house, or at a local Japanese restaurant. But honestly, if you are wanting good food there, wherever you stop, it will be good.”

MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHERE CAN WE GO KARTING?

“I spent most of my childhood at a karting track called Autobromo. It is a big track that is really good for karting.”
