What To Watch For: Storylines to keep an eye on in Budapest

Budapest is the venue for Round 7 of the 2026 FIA Formula 3 season – the final race weekend before the summer break.

Ugo Ugochukwu and Freddie Slater are separated by just one point in the fight for the Drivers’ Championship, and while they battle for the top prize, their rivals will also have their own agenda.

So as we preview the Hungaroring action, here are a few things we believe you should be looking out for…

THE FIGHT AT THE TOP

After Silverstone, Ugochukwu’s lead at the top looked very secure, as he was 18 points clear of Slater. However, after what was his worst weekend on paper, his rival is right on his tail.

The Campos Racing driver struggled for much of Friday in Spa but wound up in the top 12 anyway in ninth, while his rival was on pole.

Two separate three-place grid penalties for his part in the Qualifying ending collision dropped him down the order for both races, the first of which was the Sprint where he and Slater collided.

Both drivers scored zero points, but on Sunday, the TRIDENT driver finished third, while Ugochukwu ended up in P20 – his worst result of the season.

Now they head to Budapest separated by just one point and with the momentum on Slater’s side.

But if this season has taught us anything you cannot predict what will happen next. All we know is that both drivers will be gunning for glory in Budapest and for the championship lead in the summer break.

IT’S NOT ONLY ABOUT TWO

While the top two are in a direct fight, it does not take much for others to join them.

Currently, Théophile Nael is their closest rival, 38 points behind Slater, and while that looks large, all it takes is one bad weekend for the top two and a great one for another for that gap to be come down.

This is what the likes of Nael, Noah Stromsted, Ernesto Rivera, Maciej Gladysz, Hiyu Yamakoshi, Brando Badoer, Bruno del Pino, Pedro Clerot, Taito Kato, and many others will be telling themselves.

Currently, those drivers are ranked third to 11th in the Standings and are separated by just 20 points.

One victory could catapult any of these eight right into the thick of the title fight, as seen by Rivera going from 11th to fifth in the Championship after his Spa-Francorchamps victory.

So while Ugochukwu and Slater are currently in a battle of their own, someone else still might put their name into the hat in Budapest.

This should give confidence not only to the eight behind them, but to the rest of the field who may not have had the seasons they would have wanted.

RAIN ON SUNDAY?

Formula 3 is still yet to have a proper wet race this season, but could that be about to change this weekend?

Currently the forecast shows that there is a chance of rain on Sunday morning in the middle of the Feature Race, which could throw a spanner in the works.

Last year’s longer race started in the rain but eventually dried out. However, it was still wet enough that the drivers did not need to change from the Wets to the slicks.

Could that be different this year? Is it possible that the race will start dry and if it does rain, it will force the teams to decide on whether they pit or stay out?

Pitstops are not mandatory in Formula 3, but the teams can often be seen practicing them on race weekends. If the radar is right, they might be needed on Sunday.
