What To Watch For: A few key talking points ahead of the title decider in Madrid

A few key talking points to look at heading to Madrid such as Freddie Slater and Ugo Ugochukwu prepare to battle it out for the title

A special few months of racing is set to come to an end as we approach the final round of the 2026 FIA Formula 3 season in Madrid.

The newest venue on the calendar hosts the finale, with both championships still yet to be decided. On top of that, there are several drivers and teams aiming to sign of in style.

So before we head out of the pitlane as the Madring here is everything we think you should be keeping an eye on this weekend…

THE TITLE CHASING TWO

Just 15 points separate Freddie Slater and Ugo Ugochukwu at the top of the Championship Standings, and Madrid will see the climax of an all-time great title fight.

Slater has had the upper hand in recent rounds. Since Silverstone, the TRIDENT driver has scored 55 points, while his rival has achieved just 22 in that period.

In addition to that, the Briton has had two pole positions at Spa-Francorchamps and Monza, while was second in Budapest.

Slater and Ugochukwu are set to battle it out for the title in Madrid

As for Ugochukwu, he was only in the top 12 at Budapest and has been forced to fight through the field in Belgium and most recently at the Temple of Speed.

But the Campos Racing driver will take pride from the fact that he has fought through more often that not, and also that he still has a massive chance to win.

Ugochukwu will also take confidence from the fact that he set the fastest time of the Madrid test, although Slater also excelled – with both drivers leading two sessions apiece.

So both will believe that it could be them standing with the biggest prize come the end of the weekend, and they have shown a willingness to also go wheel-to-wheel with each other.

It sets up a fascinating final round, and for our first race weekend in Madrid, what more could we ask for?

Rivera and Nael are distant contenders for the title as well this weekend

THE BATTLE FOR THIRD (AND MAYBE THE TITLE)

Ugochukwu and Slater are not the only drivers with something to fight for, every other member of the grid will have their own agendas.

For example, both Ugochukwu’s teammates Ernesto Rivera and Théophile Nael are mathematically still in with a chance of winning the title.

Now it is a longshot and it will take a lot for that to happen, but outside of that, both drivers will want to make sure that they are on the championship podium.

However they are not alone in those desires, as just 32 points separate Rivera in third to Mattia Colnaghi in 13th.

If you extend that even more, the gap from Rivera to Alessandro Giusti in 20th is 53 points, and while it is a tall order for the MP Motorsport driver, it shows how tight things are in the midfield.

So each of these drivers will know that a strong weekend in Madrid could transform their position in the final Standings.

With three races on offer it is a chance for several drivers to climb up the Standings

It will also give them a lot of momentum going into the winter and into their next season of racing.

TRIDENT AIMING TO STOP CAMPOS

The drivers will have their own agendas but so will the teams, especially Campos and TRIDENT.

Going into the weekend, the gap between the top two is 64 points, which means they are on the brink of winning their second consecutive Teams’ Title.

But the Spanish outfit might have feared that lead being cut down on Friday afternoon in Monza, when Freddie Slater and Matteo De Palo qualified on the front row – while Ugochukwu and Nael were down the order.

However De Palo’s technical infringement, and Slater’s mechanical issue that caused him to retire from the Feature mean TRIDENT’s hopes of cutting majorly into Campos’ advantage were dented.

They still have a chance, however, and head to Madrid with momentum. But Campos know that if they perform at the level they have shown all season, they will have the title wrapped up.

The drivers will face the challenge of racing around Madrid for first time

A NEW VENUE AND NEW FORMAT

An added factor coming into this weekend is one that we cannot forget – and that is Madrid is a new venue.

While the drivers and teams got their first taste of the track in last month’s test, race weekends are very different, especially this one.

There will be two Qualifying sessions and two Feature Races this weekend. This means the drivers and teams have two races on Saturday – the Sprint and Feature Race 1.

This puts a lot of pressure on the drivers but also their teams, but it is also means there is more opportunity for success.

It will be a brand-new weekend for everyone, adding another layer of intrigue to what is already an exciting first visit to Madrid.
