FOLLOW UP: Piastri denies news of Alpine F1 promotion for 2023

Alpine have announced that 2020 FIA Formula 3 Champion Oscar Piastri will be driving for the team for the 2023 Formula 1 season.

Becoming the first F3 Champion to graduate to F1, the Australian driver impressed many during his path through the junior catergories.

Piastri took two wins alongside four podium finishes on his way to the F3 title in his rookie campaign with PREMA Racing, before going on to be crowned Formula 2 Champion the following season - becoming only the third driver to take back-to-back F2 and F3 titles alongside Charles Leclerc and George Russell.

The 21-year-old has spent the past season serving as Alpine's reserve driver, having been a part of the French team's academy since 2020 and will now partner up with Esteban Ocon for his first F1 campaign.

“Oscar is a bright and rare talent. We are proud to have nurtured and supported him through the difficult pathways of the junior formulae," said Otmar Szafnauer, Team Principal of BWT Alpine F1 Team.

"Through our collaboration over the past four years, we have seen him develop and mature into a driver who is more than capable of taking the step up to Formula 1.

"As our reserve driver he has been exposed to the team at the track, factory and testing where he has shown the maturity, promise and speed to ensure his promotion to our second seat alongside Esteban. Together, we believe the duo will give us the continuity we need to achieve our long-term goal of challenging for wins and championships.”
