Interview
Campos Racing’s Mari Boya recovered to achieve his best finish of 2025 so far, earning fifth in the Feature Race on Sunday.
Having looked set to finish on the podium in the Imola Sprint Race, Boya’s weekend unravelled after an issue took him out of the running.
However, the Spaniard was in a defiant mood on Sunday morning, driving through the pack to go from 10th on the grid to achieve a fifth-place finish in a tactical Feature Race.
Speaking afterwards, Boya admitted that he was disappointed to not feature on the podium across the weekend, but that it had been a strong ending to a difficult three days.
“It was a good race to be honest. Yesterday was a shame with what happened, but I’m happy with how we did today.
“We were quick today, but I was sure yesterday that if I finished the race, I would have understood a bit more what the tyres were like, especially in the last laps.
“I’d asked my engineer to make a change on the car thinking that things would go in one direction, but it wasn’t the case. So, it was a shame what happened but also a bit of a compromise in the Feature Race today. But I’m still happy with the result.”
Reviewing his race in more depth, Boya says that his launch at the start put him in a great position to fight for the higher points-paying positions.
From there, it was his speed through Variante Alta and Rivazza that were the keys to his progress through the pack.
Boya said that his performances were hugely encouraging, despite not securing the points haul he feels was achievable across the Sprint and Feature Races.
“It was quite tricky. I think what our strong point today was the chicane and the last two corners where I really close to the guys in front and was able to make moves into Turn 2. So, I was happy with that. Together with a good start, it made everything a bit easier I feel.
“I always have the confidence in myself and my team. But this weekend has been a weekend from a guy that can win the Championship. I was able to get P5 today after starting from P10, and that was with a bit of traffic in Qualifying.
“I think it’s a good result. If I had secured P3 yesterday, the only guy who would have scored more points than me is the guy that won the Feature Race.
“So, if we can have these kinds of points-scoring performances in the upcoming rounds, I think we can fight for everything. I feel super, super confident.”
With the second leg of the triple-header coming right away, Boya is brimming with confidence that he and Campos can put right what went wrong in Imola around a track where Qualifying is everything.
The Spaniard says he enjoys the Monte Carlo streets but is keen to secure results he believes are well within his and the team’s grasp.
“I really like the track. Qualifying is obviously really important, more than usual. Last year, I felt super confident, competitive coming really close to Pole Position but in the last sector, I touched the wall. The confidence is super high though and I feel our car really suits the streets of Monaco.”
