Mari Boya was pleased with his and Campos Racing’s efforts in the Spielberg Sprint Race, after the Spaniard came through the field to finish sixth, just behind his two teammates.

The 21-year-old started in P14 but bided his time in the race before making a late charge for the points, crossing the line in P6 behind Nikola Tsolov in fourth and Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak in fifth.

Reflecting on the 21-lap race afterwards, Boya said: “I knew coming into this one that degradation with the Soft compound would be a key factor and there are many places to overtake.

“So I think we maximised what we could do today. I'm quite happy, so we will work harder for tomorrow to try and get a bit more if it's possible. The race will be longer,so I am looking forward to it.”

At the start of Lap 13, Boya was running just outside the points in P11, before a collision between Charlie Wurz and Brando Badoer – which ended the former’s race and theN caused the latter to come into the pit lane – promoted him up to ninth.

Moments later though before the Safety Car came out, the Aston Martin Driver Academy talent overtook Callum Voisin for P8 at the exit of Turn 4. He was then able to make up more places in the closing stages.

Talking through his approach to the Sprint Race, Boya explained: “There is a lot of mess especially at the beginning. It's really hard to make the difference compared to the cars around, because it's really hard to follow.

“So I tried to keep my tyres in a good window and then tried to get the benefit at the end of the race. Today it paid off but let’s see how tomorrow goes.”

To finish in sixth, Boya overtook Rafael Câmara and Martinius Stenshorne late on, in a battle that went right to the end of the race.

“I wasn't expecting that,” recapped Boya. “I had a really good exit at T1, expected to overtake Stenshorne easily before the braking of T3, but that was not the case.

“I think we maximised it at the end. I think I solved the situation quickly, I adapted to it, I lost three places on the entry but then I prepared the exit really well and overtook them into T4. I think I maximised it but for sure it was a bit risky.”

This result comes of the back of the announcement that Boya had joined the Aston Martin Driver Academy, and after he qualified 14th on Friday.

Looking ahead to the races, the Spaniard is eager to try to end the week on a high.

“It has been a really good week for me,” he said. “Qualifying yesterday was a bit of bad luck, only two-tenths from P2. Looking at the details on the data with my engineer, we learned a lot, we keep going.
